IHLIA LGBT Heritage: exhibition at the UvA-Library (Humanities)

IHLIA LGBT Heritage (formerly International Homo/Lesbian Information center and Archives) is the LGBT-heritage organization of The Netherlands. Built over almost forty years and growing, the IHLIA collection documents the history, everyday life and culture of the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) community with a range of documents – both printed (books, periodicals, reports, thesis) and audiovisual (documentaries, films) – which makes of IHLIA LGBT Heritage an archive of paramount importance for Gender and LGBT-studies and research worldwide.

In 1978, the birth of the Documentation Center for Gay Studies (popularly ‘Homodok’) – later to become IHLIA – was tightly connected with the University of Amsterdam: to celebrate this long-lasting affiliation, and to bring the scholarly relevance of the IHLIA collections to the attention of both UvA-staff and –students, a small selection of items from IHLIA LGBT Heritage is now exhibited at the UvA-Library P.C. Hoofthuis: books related to Whisper their Love: Vintage Lesbian Pulp Covers (exhibition currently open on IHLIA-square/IHLIA-plein at the Central Public Library Amsterdam, 6th floor) and several works illustrating the variety and significance of the IHLIA collections are on show. March 17th through May 1st, 2016.
